How to play

Everything from your first night to relighting the Heartforge.

Getting started

  1. Get the launcher. Sign in (or make an account) on the download page and install it for your computer.
  2. Sign in in the launcher. You need an Elyndral account to play. We'll email you a link: open it to confirm your address (you need that to join servers).
  3. Press Play. The launcher updates the game for you first, then opens it.
  4. Pick a world. Under Singleplayer, make a new world and choose Survival (gather, craft, survive) or Creative (every block, flying, nothing can hurt you). To play with others, see Playing together.
Your skin: in the launcher's Profile, pick a skin or upload your own 64×64 picture. Skins made for Minecraft work as they are.

Your first day

In Survival you start with nothing, and the first night comes quickly. A good first day:

  1. Punch a tree. Hold left click on a log until it breaks, then walk over the log to pick it up. Get a few.
  2. Make planks and sticks. Press E: your inventory has a crafting grid. Put a log in it to get planks; two planks one above the other make sticks.
  3. Make a wooden pickaxe (three planks across the top, two sticks down the middle), then dig some stone and make stone tools: they're faster and last longer.
  4. Find coal (black spots in stone) and make torches: coal over a stick. Creatures that come out at night don't like the light.
  5. Build a shelter before dark: anything with walls, a roof and a door. Light it inside.
  6. Make a chest (eight planks round the edge) to keep your things safe.
  7. Make a bed (three wool over three planks; sheep give wool) and sleep in it: you'll come back there if you die, and sleeping at night skips to morning.
Lost? Press R for the recipe book, or F3 to see your position. Type /goal to see what to do next.

Crafting, smelting and the recipe book

You craft in the grid in your inventory (E). Put items in the shape of a recipe and take the result from the box on the right. Shift-click the result to make as many as you can.

The recipe book

Press R, or click the green book in your inventory, to look up any recipe. Search by name. Click an item to see how it's made: for crafting recipes the book shows the ingredients laid out in your grid.

The furnace

Eight stone round the edge make a furnace. Put ore or food on top, fuel (coal, wood, planks) underneath, and collect the result. Ores become ingots; raw food gets cooked.

Mining and tools

Every ore needs a good enough pickaxe, or it breaks without dropping anything.

The world goes up to Y 319 and down to unbreakable bedrock at Y -64. The deeper you go the rarer and better the ores, and the more dangerous the caves. Bring torches and a bucket of water.

Health and food

  • You have 10 hearts. Falling, drowning, lava, fire and creatures hurt you. Health comes back slowly when you haven't been hurt for a while and aren't hungry.
  • Eat to keep your hunger bar up: hold food and right-click. Farm crops by tilling soil with a hoe and planting seeds; cook meat in a furnace.
  • When you die you come back at your bed (or the spawn point if you haven't slept in one), and you keep what you were carrying.
  • Wear armour (it goes in the slots beside your crafting grid) and carry a sword before going deep.

Potions and the brewing stand

  1. Craft a brewing stand: an iron ingot over three cobblestone.
  2. Make glass bottles from glass and fill them at water (right-click it).
  3. Put up to three water bottles in the bottom slots and glow fungus (from the deep caves) on top. After 20 seconds they become awkward potions.
  4. Now add one ingredient on top: sugar (swiftness), a feather (leaping), a fang (strength), a melon slice (healing), berries (regeneration), a carrot (night vision), raw fish (water breathing), wax (fire resistance) or chitin (poison).

Drink a potion by holding it and right-clicking. You keep the bottle.

The goal: relight the Heartforge

Elyndral has an adventure to follow if you want to. Your next step is always shown on screen, and /goal lists them all:

  1. Craft a stone pickaxe.
  2. Smelt an iron ingot.
  3. Find cobalt below Y -40 (you need an iron pickaxe).
  4. Mine heartstone below Y -56 for Ember Shards (you need a cobalt pickaxe).
  5. Forge the Core Key from ember shards, embersteel and a block of cobalt.
  6. Wake a Heartforge in the Deep with the Core Key: find one in a Sanctum, or build your own and place it below Y -56.
  7. Defeat the Hollow Warden that rises from it.
